Robert Elmer Hunter Jr. passed away peacefully on Monday, March 4, 2019 at the home of his daughter Wanda following a weekend surrounded by family and friends.

Bobby, as he was called, grew up on Indianapolis’ Westside and attended IPS #49 and Washington High School. He was a member of West Morris Street Free Methodist Church. It was said he loved Rhodius Park and may have been the first child in and last child out of the pool each season. In his younger years he raced “Late Model Stocks” and was named the Canadian Champion in 1951. He was quoted in the Indy Star as one of the “Old Timers” preceding the Inaugural Brickyard 400 and again in an article about the Jungle Park Speedway in 2016. He worked for L. C. Clark Tires in Boca Raton, FL before retiring and returning to Indianapolis to settle to the simplicity of living life with those he loved. He was known for his long entertaining stories of which he was asked to repeat often.

Bobby was preceded in death by a grandson, Evan Hunter. He leaves behind his three children, Linda, Wanda (Mel) and Jack; 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the staff of Heartland Hospice for their care.  A tradition of celebrating his birthday the day before the Indy 500 will this year be a Celebration of Life on May 25, 2019 at the home of his granddaughter Aunika Hoffman in Greenfield, In.

What a wonderful tribute! Bobby would be so proud. I feel very fortunate to have been allowed to be part of his life and being treated as though I was a member of the Hunter family!
